The Beasts, Big and Little
Revelation chapter 13
I am a big believer in the power of metaphor in preaching, whatever the
sermon. Over the years, I have contended that every sermon needs a
metaphor at its core. As a result, I tend, I suspect, to be attracted to texts that
have metaphors in them. The real challenge, then, is to see if I can take a
commonplace, or even an overused or hackneyed metaphor, and turn it into
one with some freshness and originality. The bottom line, for me, is that
sermons that have strong, new metaphors at their core are virtually
impossible to forget, or even to misunderstand. This a sermon based on the
"beast" metaphor, the Leviathan and Behemoth, of Revelation 13. I have
taken the big beasts and turned them into little beasts. See if you think it
works in this sermon.
