The Gift of Dreaming
From 'Resources for the Christian Life'
There is so much more to the Christian life than Bible reading and prayer, so
many less conventional sources of spiritual strength. So I set out on a series of
sermons to look at a whole group of them, among them such things as memory
and, this one, learning to dream. Dreaming has more than one meaning, of
course, and that was one of the fun things about the sermon. One of the things
that I have grown to like about working on a series of sermons like this one is
how much I learn doing the research, not just biblical research but research, in
this case, in the nature and power of dreaming, both the night and the day kind.
O to dream big dreams! That became the tug of the sermon. And (I don't
remember if by deliberate planning or not) I preached this on Martin Luther
King Jr. Sunday, the day before the Monday holiday. The ultimate dreamer of the
twentieth century. Talk about the power of dreams. It was a wonderful challenge
in this sermon to see if I could conjure up a sense of the importance of
dreaming--dreaming big and dreaming courageously--
still in the life of the
church and community! Come along and listen.
