Make Holy the Name of God
The Ten Commandments
This is a "do not take the name of the Lord in vain" sermon. That was a very
specific thing within the Hebrew culture, but today profanity is everywhere, and
crude, vulgar language gets thrown into the hopper with every kind of horrid use
of God, Jesus, Christ--the Lord's name. A report in the
New York Times not long
ago said that surveys indicate that profanity is worse among today's young people
than it has ever been before. The questions a preacher struggles with are
everywhere here. Does profanity matter? In there a connection between profane
speech and the state of one's heart? Is that really the problem with profanity? And
what to do about filthy language? What happens in a public place where the
common language is embarrassing and bewildering? What can, or should, a
preacher say about the nature of today's crude and insulting speech? Here is my
sermon exploring the problem of profanity in today's world.
