The Lost Art of Humility
Matthew chapter 11
Ironically, this is a sermon that arose out of the community in which I was living
and preaching at the time. It was a small community but, in many ways, a very
contentious one. It was a retirement community with a school board of older folk
who had trouble getting along, and in a very public way. The antagonism within
the board over how to tend to the community's not very large population of
children was a topic of considerable interest and discussion in the community.
The newspaper certainly kept up as well with the animosities among the board
members. It was such, in my judgment, that it had to be addressed. It was about
Christian values and concerns. I addressed it in a series of sermons about public
actions, the sermons being broadcast on local radio every Sunday. This was one
of the first of those sermons. About arrogance and humility. While I took note of
the controversy, as you will see, I tried to frame it in a larger way. And I tried to
make the slippery subject of humility as practical as I could. Even now listening
to the sermon, the crackle of that time and place, and this subject, comes back to
me very vividly. The sermon might be of interest to those wanting to speak to
public community issues. See what you think.
